This guide walks you through a quick, repeatable way to test your module’s Bluetooth range. It’s useful if you want to confirm everything is performing normally, or if you suspect one module has a weaker signal than the rest.
Before you start, it helps to know what “normal” range looks like in ideal conditions (outside, clear line of sight, minimal obstacles):
The i18 and i36 should have a range of at least 150 to 300 ft in these conditions. You can find more details in our article What Is the Range of the IGNITE System?
IGNITE Lite supports a range of up to 100 ft in the same conditions. More details can be found in our article What Is the Range of the IGNITE System?
To test your module’s Bluetooth range (or compare modules to identify one with a low signal), follow the steps below.
To Test your IGNITE i18 or i36 modules:
Step 1: Set your module up outside.
It's best to give yourself a lot of space to work with so you can get the best idea of your module's range. Set up your module outside, somewhere with a clear line of sight and minimal obstacles.
Step 2: Turn the module on and note the signal strength.
Go to the Modules screen in the IGNITE app and record the signal strength for each module when you're standing right next to them. The signal strength for each module can be found on its individual listing.
Step 3: Start moving.
Keep an eye on the app and begin to move away from your module. When you're about 100ft away, record the signal strength.
Step 4: Keep moving until the signal drops.
Once you see a module disconnect from the app, write down the distance between you and the module. This can help you determine if the module's signal is an appropriate strength or if more testing is needed.
